One Sixth of a Gill by Jean Gill

‘A rare treat‘ – J.G. Harlond, author of ‘The Empress Emerald’ ‘An eclectic mix – quite unputdownable‘ – B.A. Morton, author of prize-winning crime novel ‘Mrs Jones’ Five-minute reads. Meet people you will never forget: the night photographer, the gynaecologist’s wife, the rescue dog. Dip into whatever suits your mood, from comedy to murders; from fantastic stories to blog posts, by way of love poetry. Fully illustrated by the author; Jean Gill’s original photographs are as thought-provoking as her writing. An out of body experience for adventurous readers. Or, of course, you can ’Live Safe’.  Not for you the blind alley on a dark night, wolf-lope pacing you step for step as shadows flare on the walls. Purchase Link: Amazon Author Interview What are the main themes of your book? It’s a full collection of very varied shorts: fiction, poetry and non-fiction so each piece is different but certain themes do recur in my writing. Dogs (of course), photography, childhood, love and loss all feature, and I think the common element is emotion. I’d like readers to feel what they read and to think about it. Brain food for busy readers. Who or what inspired your story? ‘The Night Photographer’ arose from me reading a technical photography book on night photography that starts with advice on staying safe while risking the inevitable dangers of being out in the dark with an expensive camera and a tripod. That made me think about what kind of people night photographers are and then I was inside my character, much too easily! The funniest back-story is probably that behind ‘The Gynaecologist’s Wife’. I wrote the poem in my head while undergoing an appointment and to distract myself from what was going on, I started wondering what the specialist’s wife thought of his daily activities and how it affected their sex life. It’s a good job that doctor had no idea what I was thinking.  What do you like best about your primary characters?  They are quirky and, I hope, memorable. Lou, the rescue dog, is in a series of true stories. He’s a special dog and I think the way I feel about him shows in the writing. What are their worst peculiarities?  I’d say ‘best’ peculiarities because that’s exactly what makes them interesting. They live on the edge and sometimes well beyond it. The night photographer says, ‘Trespass is my territory,’ and I think that’s true of many of the characters. How do your main characters evolve?  Lou was in a shelter cage for nearly three years when I sprung him and his return to family life was very moving. One of my fictional characters is a middle-aged woman who discovers a somewhat innovatory method of improving her appearance – the twists in this story have been well-received. What’s the principal message you want to send to your audience? No message. Just an experience. What’s the nicest thing anyone has said about your book? First reactions are all so positive it’s hard to choose but this is the most recent. ‘Each page will bring out a myriad of emotions you never knew you had.’ C.M.Stibbe  Where can we purchase it? Searching for Von Honningsbergs by Rowena Wiseman

Posted by on Mar 9, 2015 in Spotlight | Comments Off on Searching for Von Honningsbergs by Rowena Wiseman

Lawson is sent overseas to retrieve three paintings for an exhibition. He has a thorny love affair with an anorexic Russian Latvian firetwirler, does a deal with two shady characters in Brazil and runs for his life from a madman in Beijing. When Lawson discovers that he has actually become involved in an art world scam, he begins to question the true value of art. What are the main themes of your book? SEARCHING FOR VON HONNINGSBERGS is all about art – what are the stories behind artworks, why did an artist paint a certain piece, why did someone end up with a particular artwork on their wall and what does it mean to them? It also questions how we interpret art. There’s a whole industry around art – there are curators, art historians, auction houses, collectors, marketers (my main character Lawson calls these people ‘parasites’) … do we lose the artist’s original intention in other people’s interpretations? Can we ever really know exactly what was in an artist’s head when they created an artwork? What is the true value of art? And finally, one of the big questions asked at the end – is it okay to do the wrong thing for the right reason? Who or what inspired your story? SEARCHING FOR VON HONNINGSBERGS was inspired by an article I read in Melbourne’s major newspaper about an art curator going overseas to search for some Sidney Nolan paintings. I began wondering about how artworks end up distributed all over the world, who owns these works and how did they come to be in their collection? What, essentially, was the story behind those artworks? What do you like best about your primary characters? I lived with Lawson’s voice in my head for many years – I find him witty, sardonic and straight up about the way things are. He hasn’t been sucked into the ‘art world wank’. He is an insider on the outside. What are their worst peculiarities? Lawson is probably pretty self-centred at the beginning, however, he does develop empathy for others along the way. I’ve got another character, called Baiba, who Lawson has a brief and stormy affair with. She’s an anorexic Latvian Russian firetwirler, who smokes cigarettes only on the weekend and gives herself orgasms to burn fat. I had a lot of fun with her as a character. How does your main character evolve? Lawson dreams of being an artist, he spends a lot of time imagining his exhibition openings, the articles people are going to write about him and his set of adoring fans, but he’s not actually producing any artworks. By the end of his journey he is actually motivated to start painting. By his own admission, as an art student he was always too proud and thought he was too talented (just no one had noticed yet) to take criticism. But by the end of the story, he realises that he doesn’t know it all and he still has a lot to learn. What’s the principal message you want to send to your audience? Perhaps that there is much more to a work of art than what we just see. What’s the nicest thing anyone has said about your book? In 2007 SEARCHING FOR VON HONNINGSBERGS was longlisted for the Australian Vogel...

What’s a Blog Tour?

Posted by on Jan 23, 2015 in FAQs | Comments Off on What’s a Blog Tour?

What is a blog tour and how can it help? The purpose of a blog tour (a virtual book tour) is to generate a buzz for your book. Instead of having to tour several cities – and surrender to the roads and railways – you can do it all from the comfort of your own home. Rather than moving from store to store, you progress through a number of scheduled blog stops. Coverage may consist of a book review, a character interview, a question and answer session, a book giveaway or a guest post. A successful tour requires a canny coordinator who is strategic in selecting blogs with a relevant readership, and is able to build anticipation with a powerful social media presence, and an engaging schedule full of prizes and fun. Are bloggers paid to review? No, payment is made to the tour planner to schedule, coordinate and produce promotional material for the tour. Bloggers do not receive payment for writing reviews. Virtual Writers works as an intermediary between the author/publishing house and the blogger. The relationship is reciprocal; the author gets exposure and the blogger has outstanding material to add to their site, which in turn increases visitor numbers and Google rank. This is known as cross-promotion and works well within the indie world of publishing. Will the tour increase my sales? The object of a blog tour is to raise your visibility and get your book in front of fresh eyes, so you can garner new readers. You will likely see an increase in social media followers and reviews, but we cannot guarantee increased sales. Can I be guaranteed positive review coverage? No, unfortunately we cannot guarantee a positive review, in fact, there is no guarantee that your book will be accepted by bloggers for review. We try to match you with bloggers who have a preference for your genre, but it is solely down to the judgement of the blogger in question. Many prefer to do an interview, while others prefer a guest post. Regardless, you can be sure that you will be connected to popular bloggers who love your genre. What happens if a host unexpectedly pulls out or fails to post? Every effort is made to adhere to the schedule, however, we may have to find a replacement site for you, if the original is unable to post on time. Rest assured we will find a suitable replacement so your tour stop numbers will be unaffected. What is expected of the author? We ask that you have your finished guest posts and interviews ready 4 weeks before they are due to be published. We ask that you make every effort to promote your blog tour and create a buzz via your own social media channels, at news groups and any forums you frequent. You are advised to make an appearance on each of the blogs you are featured, by responding to comments and interacting with blog visitors. You may also want to think about setting up a Facebook and Goodreads event page. Please be aware we require 3 months advanced notice before the proposed tour date. The author/publisher agrees to send ARCs/pdf/ebook copies of the book to host bloggers at least 6 weeks prior to the scheduled tour date. What is expected of the host blog? We ask that author interview questions are sent to the author 6 weeks prior...
